Jouhou is the pinnacle of Discordance Axis' catalog. Its a disgustingly calculated formula that breaks down the listeners comprehension and emotion only to rebuild your agressions to new heights of intensity.
Dave Witte's an absolute god behind the drums, he and guitarist Steve Procopio play off of each other in a very percarious manner, giving their short songs a dynamic unseen before in grindcore. Steve's discordant riffing is very rarely "chugga chugga" style, hes more of a fretboard dancer than anything. Witte has a unique style about his blastbeat, i can really put my finger on it but its just way more over the top than other drummers, he puts a lot of energy and power into the way he plays and that adds so much to the unbridled sonic aura of hell that is Discordance Axis.
Jon Chang is a good vocalist equipped with a very strangled screechy sort of wail as well as a guttural grunt that rivals almost any death metal band.
Finally, this is a great grindcore album compared to others in the genre because Its longer than ten minutes long!

Like cavemen with calculators, this Lawrence, KS trio weld an angular prog attack to headcrushing sludge rock. The result is a perfect alliance of imaginative musicianship and a thorough ass beating. Carnaval De Carne is the newest slab of thunder and stutter from the KILLCRANE... Carnaval is the cerebral asskicking you've been waiting for. For fans of both the progressive, complex music of Am Rep and Skin Graft Records at their respective heights, and the bastard squalls of brutal sludge a la BUZZOVEN and EYEHATEGOD. Definitely not for the timid. |

| V/A - 2001 - Today Is The Day/-(16)- [split] |
[Aug. 12th, 2006|11:52 am] |
 tracklist: 1. 16 - Balloon Knot 2. 16 - Aging Disgracefully 3. 16 - You're Not My Real Dad 4. Today is the Day - Invinicible 5. Today is the Day - Breadwinner
Split cd between L.A.s legendary sludgesters 16 and the completely maniacal Today Is The Day. 16 (who you can check out at the Sight Sounds Liberties festival Jan 31 if you live in SF) have been around forever, and their sound hasn't changed a whole lot, but then, why fix what ain't broke?! Three tracks of bass heavy sludge rock, equal parts Jesus Lizard, the Melvins and Helmet. Dark and brooding and furious. Today Is The Day contribute two tracks, also heavy and furious, but pretty weird too, even for them. The first track starts out like vintage TITD, but soon breaks down into a piano driven dirge, ringing reverb and howling whisper/falsetto vocals, sounding remarkably like Devil Doll or old Alice Cooper. Very dramatic and intense. They finish off the cd with a brilliant/stupid take on Queens Of The Stone Age's also brilliant/stupid 'Feel Good Hit of the Summer' with an incessant grinding metallic guitar riff, while the vocals consist of nothing but a recitation of drugs, from smack to cocaine to xanax to alcohol. Kinda dumb but well worth it for the other 4 tracks.

| V/A - 2006 - Hey Colossus/Dot(.) [split vinyl] |
[Aug. 12th, 2006|10:47 am] |
tracklist: 01. Hey Colossus - Kittens 02. Dot(.) - Black Acid
Hey Colossus / dot(.) split 12" Release date: June, 2006 12"
Split release between JF, Shifty (U.S) and Blinddate (Germany). 520 pressed, 109 are white vinyl, the rest in black. Mr Liam Trencher provided the art.
dot(.) are a three piece from Japan and they will crush you.
hey colossus are a six piece from the UK.
relisted cos we got the price wrong. silly us! this lp has been in the pipeline for almost two years, finally it's all come together. dot(.) are one of the doomiest bands laying down the law in japan at the moment, only corrupted are up there with them. a 3 piece with piles of split singles and one long player (on blinddate) behind them, they played the big emissions stoner festival in the u.s and crushed everyone. this 24 minute track is an evil piece of work, as grief once said: 'if it's too slow, you're too happy'. hey colossus offer up a mere 16 minutes on the other side, having recently shared a 10" with part chimp, todd, and lords, they now have a slightly different and expanded line up. this is the first release with the new line up. it has a more wall of sound (not the label) vibe too it. named after the two kittens who used to live in the bands rehearsal room, one of them is now no longer with us, rumour is a falcon made off with him. this 12" is dedicated to his memory. artwork by mr. liam trencher (of comedy core rapscallion's trencher)
